How much food can the system freeze dry each time it is used?
6-10 pounds of food will fit in your freeze dryer. That amount of food will typically fill one and one-half to two and one-half #10 cans of food–-an amount equivalent to 1.5 to 2.5 gallons.

How loud is a freeze dryer?
Technically, the freeze dryer runs at about 65 decibels which isn’t too bad. However, it is a little noisy for a kitchen. You should expect your freeze dryer to produce noise during the second half of the freeze-drying process when the vacuum pump is running. The beginning phase (during the freeze process) will not be noisy at all. Comparatively, dishwashers and washing machines have been noisy for years. They are finally getting a little quieter. Because of the noise from a washing machine, homebuilders adjusted and started building laundry rooms to minimize the noise. Harvest Right suggests the same for your freeze dryer. Keep it in your laundry room, a utility room, an extra kitchen/bedroom, or even in your garage.

How hard is it to put oil in my freeze dryer?
It’s simple. Just unscrew the cap on your vacuum pump and pour oil in until it reaches the fill line. If you’re used to filling your dishwasher and your washing machine with detergent, you’ll feel completely comfortable filling your vacuum pump.

Do I have to drain my oil?
To keep your freeze dryer running properly, simply drain the oil out of the vacuum pump after 20-30 batches. It takes just a few seconds to unscrew the spout and allow the oil to drain into a filter that is provided with the freeze dryer. If you can clean the lint out of your clothes dryer, you can drain out the oil from a freeze dryer vacuum pump.

The oil, used in the vacuum pumps, is food grade mineral oil. If you get a little oil spill it is easy to wipe up. You can refill your premier oil pump with 3/4 quart of vacuum pump oil.

Does my freeze dryer need a filter?
The freeze dryer itself does not need a filter. However, if you would like to save money on oil, Harvest Right provides a simple oil filter with every freeze dryer. To recycle your oil, simply drain the oil directly from the pump into the filter container and let the filter do the rest. Once the oil has drained into the bottom plastic portion of the filter, you can pour the oil back into your freeze dryer’s vacuum pump and re-use it just as if it were new oil.

Do I need to drain the water from my freeze dryer?
During the process of freeze drying, the water in the material being freeze dried sublimates (evaporates) and freezes in the drying chamber.  At the end of the process the freeze dryer has a defrost cycle that changes the frozen water (that was removed from the material you were drying) back into a liquid form. It then drains out of the chamber into a container of your choice. Simply pour the water into a sink or use it to water your plants.

Is the freeze dryer too heavy for one person to lift?
Depending on the model, the freeze dryers weigh between 60 lbs. and 190 lbs. It is best to have two people available help move your freeze dryer to the location where you want to keep it. You can place the freeze dryer on a rolling cart if you want the freedom to move your freeze dryer around. Otherwise a simple table or counter will suffice.

Do the new freeze dryers need an insulated door pad?
The round door pad is no longer included with the Harvest Right freeze dryers. It is not needed to run the freeze dryer.

I absolutely LOVE my freeze dryer!! I’ve tried bananas, strawberries, and apples that don’t even need reconstituted to be awesome snacks! The pulled pork, taco meat, chicken breasts and tenders, hamburger — once reconstitued they can’t be told from that which was never freeze dried. I haven’t tried candy or ice cream sandwiches, but the shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, ham and beans, beef stew, goulash, and other leftovers are now just waiting for me to need them and they won’t spoil! My only regret is that I purchased the medium size instead of the large. I do wish someone had told me to purchase the oil for the pump immediately as there is only a little that comes with the machine and more is needed quite soon if you run it as much as I do.

I’ve only had my freeze dryer for a couple of weeks. I freeze dryed a few things, but I wished there was a pause button so I can stop it a check the product with out having to start all over. Other then that every thing came out great.

I’ve had my freeze dryer for a couple of months. I ordered a large one for my brother 1st where I visit often, then decided I wanted one at home as well and bought the medium.

A family member with a medically fragile child who gets nutrition by a tubie, uses her freeze drier to create food powdered packs of nutrients to just add water. She loves keeping him healthy without prescribed mostly synthetic nutrients.

I called to order my freeze driers and he was great. Calling and ordering instead of just on line was very helpful.

We are loving both freeze driers but I think I I like the standard one better. Here’s why:

    1. We like to keep a second set of trays loaded and in the freezer ready to go. (Buy a second set of trays and lids, it is so worth it).

    2. It is easier to fill 4 smaller trays than 5 larger trays and be ready for the next run quicker.

    3. The medium trays fit the freezer in my side by side fridge. The large do not fit, we have to put them in the chest freezer which is not as easy to make a flat space for them.

    4. The large freezer can not be moved around as easily since you need a different electric set up for it (can’t just plug it in) and it is heavier. We have the medium on a cart and have had it in a guest room while we set up the room for it. Moving it around is pretty easy.

    5. The run times on the medium are usually under 24 hours so it is pretty easy even with the necessary defrosting between runs to keep it running every day. We have had ours running every day except when we were out of town for several days.

The only drawback is heat. We have it in a room right off our kitchen, and the sound wouldn’t be too bad except we have fans running to keep the heat down and can’t really close the room because it gets so hot in there 80-85* when the temp in the house is set for only 72. I imagine it won’t be so bad when this heat breaks. We are up to the 90’s outside most days this summer.

I do wish it told you how much time was left to the run, you really want to get the load out when it is complete. We keep a record book with run times for different loads so we can look back and see how long different things took.

We weight every thing that we expect to reconstitute before and after freeze drying., so we can see how much water will be needed to reconstitute.

Overall this was a great purchase for our family.
