They also have an incredibly long shelf life, meaning you can stock up and be prepared for any eventuality. And when it comes to nutritional value, these foods are hard to beat. They retain much of the original nutrients of the fresh products, so you can be sure you’re getting the nourishment you need.

But the benefits of freeze-dried and dehydrated foods don’t end there. They are also extremely cost-effective. Because they have such a long shelf life, you won’t have to worry about them going to waste, which can save you money in the long run. And in an emergency situation, every little bit helps.

But perhaps the most important benefit of freeze-dried and dehydrated foods is the peace of mind they provide. Natural disasters are unpredictable, and having a supply of emergency food on hand can provide a sense of security and preparedness. So when disaster strikes, you won’t have to worry about where your next meal is coming from.

So why wait? Take control of your emergency preparedness today and invest in a supply of pre-packaged freeze-dried and dehydrated foods. You’ll be glad you did when the next natural disaster strikes.

I’m so glad I had them with me during such a difficult time.” – Emily

EMERGENCY FOOD STORAGE AKA FOOD INSURANCE

Emergency food storage is like food insurance in that it provides a safeguard against unforeseen circumstances that could disrupt your access to a steady supply of nutritious meals.

Life is full of surprises and sometimes those surprises can be difficult to deal with. Natural disasters like hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires can strike at any time, leaving us without power, water, and other necessities. Even more common issues like power outages, transportation disruptions, and unexpected job loss can make it hard to put food on the table.

Emergency food storage is a way to prepare for these types of situations. It involves setting aside a supply of non-perishable, shelf-stable foods that can be easily stored and accessed in case of an emergency. These types of foods include things like dried grains, beans, nuts, and freeze-dried fruits and vegetables. They are specially formulated to have a long shelf life and to be easy to prepare with minimal cooking equipment. We run a sale on occasion so sign up for our email or SMS newsletter for regular information, notifications, and promotions.

Just like insurance, emergency food storage is something that you hope you never have to use, but it’s there for you when you need it. It gives you peace of mind knowing that you have a plan in place for feeding yourself and your family in the event of an emergency. It’s like having a backup plan for your meals, just in case something unexpected happens.

LONG TERM EMERGENCY FOOD STORAGE

Preparedness levels can vary greatly among households, and many people may not have enough nonperishable food and other supplies to last for an extended period of time. In fact, according to a survey conducted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in 2018, only about 41% of Americans said they had enough supplies on hand to last for three days in case of an emergency. It’s worth noting that this number may have changed in the intervening years, but it does give some indication of the general level of preparedness among American households. It’s always a good idea to have some nonperishable food and other supplies on hand in case of an emergency, and there are many resources available to help people get started with building a basic emergency kit.

WHY STOCKPILE FOOD STORAGE?

The only thing for certain is that life is full of change and uncertainty. You want to have food and water stored up for any of a plethora of reasons. Many of which are found below.

Here is a list of natural disasters that can occur in the United States:

  1. Earthquakes
  2. Tornadoes
  3. Hurricanes
  4. Floods
  5. Wildfires
  6. Droughts
  7. Winter storms and blizzards
  8. Tsunamis
  9. Landslides
  10. Volcanic eruptions

It’s worth noting that different parts of the United States are more prone to certain types of natural disasters. For example, earthquakes are more common in certain areas of the country, such as California, while hurricanes are more common along the East Coast and Gulf Coast. It’s important to be aware of the specific types of natural disasters that are most likely to occur in your area and to take steps to prepare for them.

Here is a list of types of pandemics, EMP attacks, power grid failures, and other disasters that could potentially occur in the United States:

  1. Pandemics: This can include outbreaks of infectious diseases that spread rapidly and can affect large populations. Examples include influenza pandemics and the COVID-19 pandemic.
  2. EMP attacks: An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack is a type of event that involves the release of a high-energy burst of electromagnetic radiation, which can damage or destroy electronic devices and systems.
  3. Power grid failures: This can refer to widespread outages of the electrical power grid, which can be caused by various factors such as natural disasters, equipment failures, or cyber attacks.
  4. Other disasters: There are many other types of disasters that could potentially occur in the United States, including cyber attacks, chemical accidents, oil spills, and infrastructure failures. It’s important to be prepared for a range of potential emergencies.

There are many additional reasons why someone might choose to stockpile food and water. Here are a few examples:

  1. Job loss: If you lose your job, you may find yourself in a difficult financial situation where you are unable to buy food and other essentials. Having a stockpile of nonperishable food and water can help you get through this difficult time.
  2. Riots: In the event of civil unrest or riots, it may be difficult to leave your home or access food and other supplies. Having a stockpile of food and water can help you and your family stay safe and self-sufficient during this time.
  3. Natural disasters: As mentioned earlier, natural disasters can disrupt the supply chain and make it difficult to access food and other essentials. Stockpiling food and water can help you and your family weather these events and stay safe until things return to normal.
  4. Economic downturn: In times of economic recession or instability, it can be wise to have a stockpile of food and water in case prices for these essentials rise or supplies become scarce.

Here are some more reasons why it’s great to build a large supply of food and water:

  1. Bartering: If you find yourself in a supply chain disruption or emergency situation food and clean drinking water will likely be scarce. You can barter some of your storage that you may not need for the given crisis to have more items that you could use such as tools and other resources such as clothing, bedding, fishing and hunting gear, etc.
  2. Hedging against inflation: We all experienced recent soaring inflation. Just like oil, fuel, housing, cars, etc. food prices also go up. Why not buy a one year supply for your whole family now before prices continue to go up?
  3. Peace of mind and comfort in times of distress: Being prepared for the worst brings great comfort. Many people buy groceries every few days or even daily in some cases, always eat out, and assume that things will never change. One break in the supply chain can cause so many things to crash and burn. Rest assured that building your food storage will give you much comfort in the times that lay ahead.

It’s always a good idea to be prepared for a range of potential emergencies, and having a stockpile of food and water can be an important part of that preparation.

WHERE TO STORE YOUR EMERGENCY FOOD SUPPLY?

Some people have a large space available in their basement or a location perhaps under there front porch referred to as cold storage or even a root cellar. All those places have the potential for being great places to store your emergency food storage supply but we have many other ideas as well. In fact, we wrote a whole blog post about it entitled 8 Creative Ways to Store Food Storage.

Some things to consider:

We recommend keeping it off the floor and in its original packaging (in most circumstances.) The main threats to food storage are the following:

  1. High heat: That’s why it’s not a good idea to store foods in a garage or attic where summertime temperatures can reach scorching levels. We typically recommend storing food at 70 degrees Fahrenheit or less.
  2. Moisture: Too much moisture will surely shorten the life of foods. Freeze-dried foods tend to last longer than any other preservation method because it can remove 99% of the water content of food (when processed properly.) We recommend storing food in relatively low humidity, when possible. 15% humidity seems to be ideal.
  3. Rodents: Mice, voles, racoons and other vermin can easily chew through cardboard boxes and even mylar pouches. We suggest storing emergency food items in metal cans or food-grade plastic pails with lids.

Other considerations. Freshly poured concrete has said to be capable of leeching harmful chemicals into plastic buckets. It is best to set your food storage on boards or shelves to minimize such risk.

We are huge fans of shelves for food storage. Most people have limited space so shelves work great. Other ideas include stashing items under beds, in closets, in large furniture pieces such as ottomans or couches with built-in storage.

Don’t be afraid of where you are going to store your food. With a little creativity you should be able to find sufficient places to keep your food stockpile. Oftentimes the food doesn’t take up as much space as you may have originally thought.

WHAT TYPE OF PACKAGING CAN YOU BUY FOOD STORAGE IN?

At Prep SOS, we understand that the packaging of your emergency food storage is just as important as the food itself. That’s why we offer a wide range of packaging options to suit different needs and preferences.

One of the most popular options for emergency food storage is pails. These sturdy containers are made of heavy-duty plastic and are designed to withstand a wide range of conditions. They are airtight and watertight, making them an excellent choice for long-term storage. Pails are also easy to stack, making them a convenient option for those with limited storage space.

Another popular option is #10 cans. These large cans are designed to hold a wide variety of food items and are perfect for long-term storage. They are made of heavy-duty metal and are designed to be airtight and watertight, making them an excellent choice for preserving the freshness and quality of your emergency food supply.

For those who need a more compact option, #2.5 cans are a great choice. These smaller cans are perfect for storing individual ingredients or smaller portions, and are also airtight and watertight, making them a reliable choice for long-term storage.

For an even more compact option, many people choose to store their emergency food in mylar bags. These bags are made of a durable, moisture-resistant material and are designed to protect food from light, moisture, and oxygen. They are also lightweight and easy to store, making them a convenient choice for those with limited space.

For even more protection, some of our food items are stored in mylar bags inside buckets. These buckets are made of heavy-duty plastic and are designed to withstand a wide range of conditions. WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF OPENED SURVIVAL FOOD CANS, PAILS, AND MYLAR POUCHES?

At Prep SOS, we understand that the shelf life of your emergency food storage products is an important consideration. That’s why we offer a wide range of products with long shelf lives, so you can be confident that your emergency food supply will be fresh and ready to eat when you need it.

When it comes to opened emergency food products, the shelf life can vary depending on the specific product and the conditions in which it is stored. Here is some general information to help you understand the shelf life of opened emergency food products:

  • #10 cans: The shelf life of opened #10 cans of freeze-dried and dehydrated foods is generally up to 1 year. Any longer and the food may spoil. This is because the food is exposed to air and moisture, which can cause it to go bad over time.
  • #2.5 cans: The shelf life of opened #2.5 cans of freeze-dried and dehydrated foods is also generally up to 1 year. As with #10 cans, the food may spoil if it is stored for longer than this.
  • Pails: The shelf life of opened pails of freeze-dried and dehydrated foods is also generally up to 1 year. As with the other types of containers, the food may spoil if it is stored for longer than this.

Most of our food storage products include one or more oxygen absorbers in the container to help mitigate the effects of oxygen on shelf life. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the shelf life of opened emergency food products can be affected by a variety of factors, including the temperature, humidity, and other storage conditions.

If you think that your emergency food storage products may have gone bad, here are some signs to watch for:

  • The food may smell and taste bad
  • The food may be soft and chewy instead of crunchy
  • The food may be heavily discolored

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to discard the food and not eat it. Spoiled food can make you sick, so it’s important to be cautious when it comes to the safety of your emergency food supply.

At Prep SOS, we are committed to providing the best in taste and nutrition for our emergency food storage products. If you have any questions about the shelf life of our products, or if you have any other questions about emergency preparedness, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to help you stay prepared for any eventuality.
