Emergency Food Supply
Food storage is not just for Suzy homemaker or the extreme survivalist who is ready for the world to end. Food storage, including natural disaster food, is for everybody. Food storage can be the difference between knowing your family is safe, sound, and taken care of during a disaster and leaving them without proper food or water until rescuers are able to reach them.
Emergency food supply does not have to be stored in a freezer or refrigerator, and it does not have to be heated up to kill bacteria as regular perishable foods would have to be. You don’t have to worry about freeze dried apples or strawberries spoiling within just days. With sealed packages available with many survival kits, you also don’t have to worry about pests getting into your food.
The most obvious use for food storage is of course in the event of a natural disaster. Especially in today’s economy though, many food storage enthusiasts have found that it also comes in handy in the event of job loss, pay cuts, or other everyday circumstances. Some families regularly cycle through their food storage, even when times are not tough.
Survival kits are nice, and they are typically meant to last about 72 hours. Every family should have 72 hour kits in their homes just in case you do have to run out or grab a few things and run. However, long term food storage is essential for personal readiness and care, and in some cases, it can be more affordable both in the beginning and in the long term (because many storable foods stay good for longer).
The best thing to do is to start early, buy food storage items that look good to you. Then slowly narrow it down once you find the packets, freeze dried or dehydrated items, or other foods that work for you.
